Biography
Cornelis de Jager has investigated the structure and dynamics of the solar atmosphere by spectroscopic techniques and established models of the solar photosphere. He investigated the dynamic features of the solar atmosphere; and established the conditions and the mechanisms leading to the impulsive phase of solar flares. He has also studied the most luminous stars (super and hypergiants) by spectroscopic techniques from ground and space based observatories, to determine the motion field of such stars, consisting of shock waves and gravity waves. Further, he studied the conditions leading to the instability of the atmosphere of these stars leading to the discovery of the 'evolutionary void' of hypergiants
