Biography
The Llewellyn Smith fundamental contributions include: seminal work on deep inelastic processes, in particular the demonstration (throught the GLS and momentum sum-rules) of the existence of fractional charge and baryon-number carrying quarks and neutral momentum carrying gluons inside the nucleon and of jet structures with calculable cross sections from quantum chromodynamics,; the derivation of a spontaneously broken nonabelian gauge theory of weak interactions from required unitary high energy behaviour of scattering amplitudes,; the first complete 1-loop calculation relating weak vector boson masses to neutrino cross sections which is a fulcrum of the success of the electroweak theory and; the first systematic predictive study of supersymmetric particle production in high energy pp and ep collisions which is expected to be the narbinger of physics beyond the Standard Model.
