Biography
Deepak Pental earned his BSc (Hons School) and MSc (Hons School) in Botany from Panjab University, Chandigarh and PhD (1978) from Rutgers, USA under the supervision of Professor JE Gunckel working on "in vitro morphogenesis of wheat". Subsequently, he worked as Postdoctoral and University Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham with Professor EC Cocking on protoplast culture, somatic cell hybridization and genetic transformation of plants. On returning to India in 1983, he joined as Fellow in the newly established Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI). In 1993, he moved to the Genetics Department, University of Delhi and set up the Centre for Genetic Manipulation of Crop Plants. He was Director of the South Campus of the University and is currently Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi (2005- ).
