Biography
Dwijesh Kumar Dutta Majumder earned his BSc (Hons) from Guwahati University and MSc (Tech.) (1955) and PhD degrees (1962) from Calcutta University. He had joined Computer Development & Research Division of Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), where he developed magnetic memory systems and other digital electronic circuits, and played pioneering role in building the first solid state transistorized computer ISI-JU-1 in India. He made extensive theoretical and experimental investigation on ferromagnetic properties of thin layer memory systems and very high-speed read/write circuits. In 1964, he went to the University of Michigan, USA on a UNDP Fellowship to work with NR Scott on digital computer system design and on pattern recognition and related problems in both artificial (Computer) and natural (Human) memory systems. He rose to be Head of the Computer and Communication Sciences Unit, Professor-in-Charge of Physical & Earth Sciences Division, and Joint Secretary and Joint Director of ISI.
