Biography
Professor Barrantes has made outstanding contribution in the area of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and its interaction with membrane lipids using a variety of approaches. His work over the last three decades has provided novel insight into the functioning of this important neurotransmitter receptor and its regulation by lipids. His incisive studies have clarified many features of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor function. Professor Barrantes is a pioneer in the use of biophysical (mainly fluorescence) approaches to the study of neurotransmitter receptors. His work has contributed very significantly to our understanding of the receptor in the cholinergic synapse in healthy and diseased states.
