Biography
Gilles Jean Georges Pisier has obtained many fundamental results in various parts of analysis. In recent years, Pisier's research has been focused in the area of operator spaces. Pisier has solved two long-standing open problems. He solved, jointly with Junge, the problem of uniqueness of C*-norms on the tensor product of two copies of B(H), the algebra of all bounded operators on Hilbert space. They were able to produce two such tensor norms that are nonequivalent. Pisier solved (again negatively) the well-known similarity question of Halmos. Both results are based on elegant constructions, the verifications of the examples are ingenious, and had a considerable impact leading to important further research.
