Sir Nossal is distinguished for his contributions to the field of antibody formation and immunological tolerance. Through novel and technically difficult micromanipulation techniques, he proved that one cell always only made one antibody specificity; discovered that single cells could shift from the production of IgM antibody to the production of IgG, without a change in antibody specificity; and further found that V regions were shared between the different immunoglobulin heavy chains and that V genes could be serially translocated from the
