Biography
Indra Bir Singh obtained BSc (Hons) (1961) and MSc (Geology) (1962) from University of Lucknow. After a brief stay at Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), he went to Germany in 1963 where he obtained Dr rer nat (1966) from Technical University of Stuttgart, under the guidance of H Aldinger. He worked on coastal sediments as Research Associate with HE Reineck at Seckenberg Institute and then spent two years (1967-68) as postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Oslo, Norway. He returned to Senckenburg Institute and worked on coastal sediments in association with Reineck (1969-72), developing facies models of modern shallow marine deposits, namely tidal flats, beaches and continental shelf. He joined the Department of Geology (1972), started teaching and research in the field of sedimentology and stratigraphy, became Lecturer (1975), Reader (1984) and Professor (1986), Head of the Department (1995) and Dean (2003), all at Lucknow University and worked there till his retirement in 2008. He was Visiting Professor at Louisiana State University (1984-86) and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (1998-99). He was also Alexander von Humboldt Fellow in Germany (1978-79). Presently, he is INSA Senior Scientist at Lucknow University.
