Biography
Davidson is known for developing the two-phase theory of fluidisation, i.e., the analogy between flow of gas through a bed of particles and the flow of gas through a liquid. He elucidated the mechanism of coal combustion in a fluidised bed; developed the theory of fast-fluidised beds; and the motion of coherent jets from fluidised beds. He studied the behaviour of gas-liquid bubble columns, particularly circulation patterns and the fluid mechanics and mass transfer characteristics of external loop bubble columns. His other studies were: wave motion on liquid films, particularly the generation of a standing wave by gas flow and its relevance to flooding in packed towers and bubble formation at an orifice through which gas is blown into a liquid.
