Biography
Ramsay was the first to establish the geometric properties of superimposed fold systems; developed the application of mathematical techniques to the study of structures in deformed rocks; evaluated natural rock strain using particles and markers in naturally deformed rock; developed exact methods for the geometrical classification of folds in rocks; established methods for evaluating the progressive development of rock strain in naturally deformed rocks. He also contributed to the understanding of the geometry of shear zones and did regional geological studies in Scotland, South Africa and European Alps.
