Biography
The scientific and technological contributions of Matthias Kleiner are marked by novelty, cross-disciplinary thinking and innovation. He combined these abilities with fundamental research to increase the insight into various complicated processes. Very early in his academic carrier he recognized the significance of lightweight components and flexibility in metal forming. These aspects guided his activities consistently. Several examples of his research achievements can be combined into the two topic clusters: firstly new metal forming processes, where his contributions are related to innovations in extrusion processes, sheet metal forming processes and bending processes of sheets and profiles; secondly new insight to existing processes, where Kleiner investigated several existing complicated metal forming processes like spinning, shear forming and incremental sheet forming, electromagnetic metal forming, deep drawing processes, hot stamping, joining and material characterization. In the field of lightweight components Kleiner has established a school involving the three key items consisting of the design, the material and the manufacturing.
