Biography
Professor (Sir) Michael Atiyah has worked on many fields of mathematics, expecially those involving a geometrical character. He has contributed significantly to algebraic topology through the development of K-theory which became a powerful new tool leading to the solution of difficult problems. He has developed the index theory of elliptic differential operators and combined this with fixed point theorems. More recently he has contributed to mathematical aspects of the gauge theories of elementary particles.
