Biography
Professor Vale has pioneered the single molecule biophysics of motor proteins to understand their structure and function. His work is equivalent, in elegance and importance, to unravelling the mechanism of function of ribosomes. His key achievements include - the first isolation of a microtubule motor protein, kinesin-1; describing crystal structures of kinesin and dynein and dissecting how they generate unidirectional motion with the help of energy generated from ATP hydrolysis. He is deeply committed to developing high-quality resources for science education and has pioneered iBioseminars, the preeminent source of online lectures in biology and microscopy4kids, a project to supply microscope with digital camera to school kids for just US$100.
