Biography
Professor Parr is one of the doyens of theoretical chemistry who has pioneered many original developments in atomic and molecular quantum theory for four decades. Although he is more popularly known as one of the originator of the celebrated Pariser-Parr-Pople method for conjugated systems, this is only one among his many works of amazing diversity. These works have ranged from ab initio (including configuration-interaction) formulations of the electronic structure and properties of atoms and molecules to elegant treatments of the vibrational and electronic spectra of molecules. Each of his papers contains new ideas and thus his papers have provided sustained inspiration to generations of chemist. Since 1974, he has proposed a large number of new developments (e.g., the most rigorous definition of electronegativity) in density functional theory in which he is the leading practitioner among chemists.
