Biography
Professor Ley is an acclaimed world leader in chemistry with many seminal contributions in organic synthesis. Professor Ley’s group has published extensively on the synthesis of natural products and an extraordinarily large number of natural products (which currently stands at 110) have been successfully synthesized by his group. In doing this he has made significant advances in many areas of organic chemistry; his use of iron chemistry, encapsulated reagents, microbial oxidation, spiroketals and microwave chemistry stand as ground-breaking achievements. Immobilized reagents is an area his name is intrinsically linked to, after pioneering their use in multi-step organic synthesis to make compounds in a cleaner and more effective way. He has also devised many practical and useful protecting groups using acetal chemistry, done significant work in the area of organic catalysis and was the inventor of TPAP, a catalytic oxidant used worldwide and cited extensively.
