Biography
VLS Bhimasankaram obtained his MSc (1951) and DSc in Applied Geophysics (1957) from Andhra University. In 1956, he was appointed as Lecturer in Geophysics in the Andhra University. He was in Germany during 1957-58 for specialization in Geomagnetism. Between 1958 and 1961 he was an INSA Senior Fellow. In 1962, he was awarded the prestigious Nuffield Foundation Fellowship of the United Kingdom, and did research work in Paleo-magnetism and Rock-magnetism under PMS Blackett, at Imperial College, London. During this period he elucidated the magnetic self-reversals in pyrhhotites, which he could demonstrate in the laboratory. He worked as the Chairman and Managing Director of AP Mineral Development Corporation, Government of Andhra Pradesh (AP) during 1987-89 and became Dean, Faculty of Sciences, Osmania University (1989-91). He retired from active service in November, 1991 and became Emeritus Scientist, CSIR (1991-94) and Emeritus Fellow, UGC (1994-96).
