Y Takeda

Biography

Professor Takeda is the most eminent bacteriologists in Japan. His work of past four decades on enteric pathogens and enteric toxins has gained international recognition. Professor Takeda is an authority on several enteric toxins including the thermostable direct haemolysin of Vibrio parahaemolyticus, the heat-labile and heat-stable toxin of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, cholera toxin of Vibrio cholerae.Shiga toxin of Shigella dysenteriae type 1 and on the Shiga-like toxins of Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli. His work on toxins included protein purification, structure function relationships, mechanism of action, identification of toxin receptors and genetics and molecular aspects of these toxins. He was associated with the discovery of the new cholera serogroup Vibrio cholerae O139 Bengal along with his collaborators in NICED, Kolkata. He was also associated with detection of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 in Japan and played a very important role in tracking and mitigating the outbreaks.
