Biography
Dr. Raj Kumar Singh, B.V.Sc. & A.H., M.V.Sc (Veterinary Microbiology & Immunology) and PhD (Veterinary Virology), presently serving as Director-cum-Vice-Chancellor of the Premier Veterinary Institute of the country- Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Izatnagar, U.P. was born on July, 2, 1958 at Pratapgarh (UP). Dr. Singh is a noted scientist and academician of high repute in the field of Veterinary Sciences with specialization in Veterinary Microbiology, Biotechnology, Molecular Epidemiology, Diagnostics, Vaccinology and Equine Science. He has special interest in climate changes environmental conservation, animal and microbial biodiversity conservation and capacity building. Prior to joining as Director, IVRI on February 05, 2014; Dr. Singh served as Director, National Research Centre on Equines, and Veterinary Type Culture Centre, Hisar, Haryana (Dec., 2008 to Jan. 2014); along with additional charge of Director, National Research Centre on Camel, Bikaner (Feb.-June, 2010, Dec. 2008 to Jan. 2014) and Director, Central Institute for Research on Buffalo (March, 2013). During his committed and illustrious career spanning over 25 years, Dr. Singh developed several innovative and need-based technologies in the form of National patents (03), important animal vaccines, diagnostic tests and kits including live attenuated vaccines (14) namely (thermo-adapted TCRP, goatpox, sheeppox, camelpox, orf, thermo-adapted PPR (sheep isolate) for sheep, thermo-adapted PPR (goat isolate) for goat, Highly Attenuated goatpox (HAGP), PPR+Goatpox double combination, tsPPR + HAGP double combination, PPR+Goatpox+Orf for goats, PPR+sheeppox+Orf for sheep, deuterated PPR (Sungri); and a few vaccine candidates) and rapid and reliable diagnostics (PCRs for Mycobacterium bovis and M. tuberculosis differentiation, buffalopox virus, camelpox virus, sheeppox virus, goatpox virus, orf virus; RT-PCRs for Rabies, Bluetongue(BT), PPR, equine influenza; qPCRs for camelpox, buffalopox, goatpox and PPR;recombinant protein antigen-based Diagnostic ELISAs for BT, PPR, Capripox, B. mallei, equine influenza; monoclonal antibody-based ELISAs like sELISA and cELISA for BT, etc. Dr. Singh has been the recipient of prestigious National Awards (05) namely, DBT Tata Innovation Fellowship Award (2013); Rafi Ahmad Kidwai Award (2011) - (Animal Sciences); Agriculture Research Leadership Award (2011); ICAR Team Research Award (2008); Special Academic Award of NAVS, India (2003) besides notable Scientific Society Awards(07), Institute Appreciation Award (01), Best Paper Awards(04) and Merit Scholarships/ Appreciations (05). He has been bestowed with distinguished Fellowships/Associateships/ Membership(12) of noted scientific and profession societies viz. FNAAS(2013), FIVS(2011), FICN(2011), FIAVMI(2011), FISVIB(2010), FAEB (2010), FSIIP(2007), FNAVS(2006), FSPR(2004), FASc(AW)(2003), ASc(AW)(2003) and, prestigious FAO Fellowship for training in recombinant DNA of Viruses at University of California, Davis, USA (1994). He served on distinguished positions /port folios (10) in scientific and professional societies viz., President, ISVIB (2013,2014); Vice President, ISVIB (2 terms, 2006-2010); Elected Member, Governing Council of NAVS, (2010-2013); Vice President, Indian Virological Society (2011 onwards); Vice President, Society of Biosafety, India (2010 onwards); Member, Editorial Board, Animal Science Review (since 2013); Member, Executive Committee of IAVMI; Member, National Advisory Committee on “Non-nuclear Applications of Heavy Water and Deuterium (NAHWD-2010). He has also been the life member or alumni of more than 26 prestigious professional societies. Dr. Singh also authored 2 books and contributed 15 book chapters. He has published around 150 scientific research articles, Popular/Technical Articles/Reviews in peer reviewed National/International journals of high impact factor. Dr. Singh has supervised 8 Ph.D., 9 M.V.Sc. and 2 M.Sc. students. He has been Reviewer for many reckoned Journals like PlosOne, Vaccine, Journal of Virological Methods, Vet. Microbiology, Archives of Virology, African Journal of Microbiology, African Journal of Agriculture, etc.; and a Member, Editorial Board of Indian Journal of Animal Science (2010 till date).
