Aasim Khan

Biography

Digital politics, Internet and democracy, New media and society, Civil society and public sphere in India. PhD (Awaited), King's College London, UK Aasim Khan is a social scientist with cross-disciplinary interests in the theories of new media and society and their intersection with the field of politics, policy and democracy in contemporary India. He completed his B.Sc. from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University and holds an MA from the AJK Mass Communications Research Center, Jamia Millia Islamia. He also holds an MA in Global Media from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. In 2012, he was awarded a research fellowship to pursue a PhD in Contemporary India at King’s College London and he is currently revising his final dissertation. His doctoral research focuses on the role of civil society in India’s new media and online privacy debates, explaining the change since the emergence of digital networks in the late 1980s. Over the years, Aasim’s research have appeared in various academic journals as well as in the popular press. His research has been published in journals including SARAI MediaNagar (2006), the Economic and Political Weekly (2013), Global Policy (2014) and Culture Unbound (forthcoming). He has also contributed chapters for research anthologies published by Penguin India and Zubaan books (2012) and Orient Blackswan (forthcoming). His research has been supported by a range of institutions including a student stipendship by CSDS Delhi (2005), Fellowship for Mid-career journalists by PANOS South Asia (2008), Mazumdar Fellowship and Global Institute Fellowship, King’s College London (2012-15.) Prior to his move to academia, Aasim worked for several years in broadcast journalist and reported as Senior Correspondent with the national news network CNN-IBN. Subsequently, he also worked in international development as a Regional Media Officer for the humanitarian aid agency Oxfam GB. His journalism and commentaries have also appeared in various media in India, Europe and the US.
