N.m. Van Der Grijp

Biography

Nicolien van der Grijp is a senior researcher of the department of Environmental Policy Analysis of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM). Her research interests are related to environmental law and policy at the international, EU and national level. She is specialised in applying social scientific research methods to evaluate how legal instruments are implemented in practice. She has 25 years of experience in doing contract research for international organisations, the European Commission, and the Dutch government. In 2008, Van der Grijp finalised her dissertation about global legal pluralism in relation to pesticide risk management focusing on state and non-state actor approaches. In 2010, she published a book, together with Prof. Joyeeta Gupta, at Cambridge University Press, titled ‘Mainstreaming Climate Change in Development Cooperation: Theory, Practice and Implications for the European Union’. In 2013, she co-edited a book, together with Prof. Joyeeta Gupta and Dr Onno Kuik, at Routledge, titled ‘Climate Change, Forests and REDD: Lessons for Institutional Design’, published by Routledge. Important foci in her research are the environment-development nexus, multi-layered implementation processes, mainstreaming of climate change in sectoral policies, and sustainability labelling and certification. Her recent project work focused on governance options to reduce marine litter (CleanSea project) and on wildlife crime (European Parliament project). She is currently working on an EU FP7 project about the application of innovative energy technology in climate neutral neighbourhoods (NEXTbuildings). Van der Grijp is a co-author of the digital Handbook on the implementation of EU environmental policy in the Netherlands.
