Dr Thomas Brodie

Biography

I studied for a BA degree at Hertford College, Oxford, from 2006 until 2009, before continuing to take an MSt and DPhil between 2009 and early 2014. I held a Hanseatic Scholarship at the Centre for Contemporary Historical Research in Potsdam during the academic year 2013/14, and subsequently taught at the University of Leeds from September 2014 until June 2015. My doctoral dissertation was officially commended by the judges of the Wiener Library’s Fraenkel Prize in October 2014. I joined Jesus as a departmental lecturer in modern history in summer 2015.

Research Interest

Modern German history, the Third Reich, the social and cultural histories of religion and war in Germany and Europe during the 19th and 20th centuries. My doctoral project examines German Catholics on their nation’s home front during the Second World War, analysing their understandings of the conflict, relations with the Nazi authorities, and levels of religious practice. This is under contract to be published as part of the Oxford Historical Monographs series. My new research investigates the transformations of German Protestant nationalism between the 1860s and 1960s, by analysing Protestants’ changing attitudes towards war and peace during this period.
