Biography
Dr. B. R. Barwale, Founder Chairman of Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company Private Limited (Mahyco) was as a visionary, well-known entrepreneur, philanthropist and educationist. With an agricultural family background, Dr. Barwale’s passion for contributing to this sector and to the country’s growth defined his work through his lifetime. Widely regarded as the father of the Indian seed industry, Dr. Barwale’s contribution was acknowledged through several awards including the 12th World Food Prize by the World Food Prize Foundation in 1998 and Honorary Life Membership to Federation International Seedsmen (FIS), the international apex body for the seed industry.Dr. Barwale was awarded the Padma Bhushan award in March 2001 in recognition of his contribution to the Indian Agriculture. He has written two books during the course of his life: ‘My Journey with Seeds and the Development of the Indian Seed Industry’ and ‘Bhoomi Putra’.
