Biography

 Dr. Byomkesh Manna is presently working as a Deputy Director in the Data Management Division of the National Institute of Cholera & Enteric Diseases (NICED) under Indian Council of Medical Research, a WHO collaborating centre for research and training on diarrhoeal diseases. Dr. Manna graduated in Statistics from Calcutta University in 1975 and completed his Masters in Statistics from same university in the year 1978. He joined the Department of Epidemiology, National Institute of Cholera & Enteric Diseases (NICED), Calcutta, in 1981. Dr. Manna has been working on epidemiological field studies and Hospital based Clinical studies with particular emphasis on biostatistics and research methodology. He did Ph.D. in Biostatistics from Banaras Hindu University in 1995. Dr. Manna worked in the Department of Biostatistics, University of California, Los Angeles, USA in the year 1996-97 for one year as a Post Doctoral Fellow. Dr. Manna is actively involved in conducting various research projects in collaboration with International agencies like International Vaccine Institute, Korea, Johns Hopkins University, USA, Centre for Vaccine Development, Maryland, USA, World Health Organization, Geneva and also with Glaxo Smith Kline, Belgium. These collaborative studies address vaccine trials for Typhoid, Cholera, Measles, Hib and Rotavirus. Since 2002, he is the co-investigator of a large typhoid vaccine demonstration project and a phase III trial of an oral cholera vaccine in urban slum areas of Kolkata in collaboration with International Vaccine Institute, Korea. Dr. Manna is an expert in both data management and statistical analysis as well as community based field work. He leads a team of more than 300 staff for vaccine trials. Recently, he has successfully completed large community based Typhoid Vaccine effectiveness Trial with a total population of 60,000 and oral cholera vaccine efficacy trial with over 100,000 population in urban slums of Kolkata. Dr. Manna also acted as the Co-Investigator of a large community-based study to assess immunization practices and prevalence of Hib pneumonia and meningitis among children less than 2 years in a rural area near Kolkata.
