Biography

"Joined the National Institute of Nutrition of the Indian Council of Medical Research permanent services in 1992. Have been working in the Food and Drug Toxicology Research Centre of the Institute since 1987. Awarded PhD in Food Science and Nutrition in 1993 by the SNDT Womens’ University Mumbai for work on Dietary Intake of Aflatoxin and risk assessment. Area of research includes Risk analysis of Mycotoxins, safety assessment of GM foods and development of analytical methods and protocols for their detection, evolving prevention strategies for mould and mycotoxin contamination. Currently engaged in carrying out assessment of allergenicity of novel proteins in GM foods for pre-market approval of GM crops in India. International training obtained on safety assessment and detection of GM foods, in vitro toxicology methods for determining mechanism of toxicity of mycotoxins, risk analysis of food contaminants for WTO-SPS Measures. Resource person for national & international training programmes/ workshops on mycotoxins and safety assessment of GM foods. Awards and nominations received include DBT Biotechnology Overseas Associateship, USDA Borlaug Fellowship in Agricultural biotechnology and food safety, Joint FAO/WHO JECFA Expert for 2007-2011 and DBT nominee as member of IBSC committees."
