Biography

"I did my Ph.D. on radiation interaction with matter using Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) technique, in 1987. Have worked as post doctoral research fellow in Sweden and Germany, and worked on the development of X-ray analytical techniques (such as EDXRF, PIXE, PIGE, SYXRF) for trace elemental analysis. Experience abroad has been fruitfully exploited for indigenous development of PIXE technique at the Institute of Physics (IOP) Bhubaneswar and Cyclotron Laboratory, Physics department, Panjab University, Chandigarh. These are among the 3-5 such facilities available in India. PIXE at the Panjab University is the only such facility available in university system in India. We are applying these techniques for the analysis of environmental, medical and archaeological samples. Also a new EDXRF facility in collaboration with Physics department, Panjab University, Chandigarh through AVH equipment grant of AVH, Foundation, Germany was established. I am continuously involved with collaborative work with colleagues within the department as well as from other institutes. Many of the Ph.D. students have worked on interdisciplinary problems in the area of environmental and the medical sciences. Currently in collaboration with Prof. M.P. Bansal, we are exploiting the Metallothionein protein for understanding the metal homeostasis mechanism and the biosensor and diagnostic application. In this we have isolated MT from the liver of Zn supplemented rat. We have raised polyclonal antibodies in rabbit against MT. Has developed impedimetric biosensor for MT with sensitivity upto sub ppm level. Our group has developed the required spectroscopic, protein isolation, and insilico infrastructure and the necessary skills."
