Biography

Lalit Dandona, MD, MPH, is Distinguished Research Professor and Director of the Wellcome Trust Capacity Building Programme-1 at the Public Health Foundation of India in New Delhi, and Professor of Global Health at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, University of Washington, Seattle, USA Prof. Dandona and his research teams have carried out public health research in India for twenty years on population health measurement, health systems, intervention evaluation, research capacity, HIV/AIDS and blindness. Several of these research projects have been multi-country collaborations. Prof. Dandona has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and has served on the editorial boards of 10 journals and as scientific reviewer for about 40 journals and several granting agencies. His profile was published in the Lancet in 2001 and he received the 2006 BioMed Central Research Award in Medicine for public health research on HIV in India. Prof. Dandona serves on the Advisory Board of the Global Health Initiative, University of Chicago, USA, and has served as a technical expert for Professorial appointments at the University of Sydney,the National University of Singapore and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Prof. Dandona received his medical training at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, the Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland Schools of Medicine in Baltimore, USA, and his public health training at the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health. He previously served as Professor and Chair of International Public Health at the University of Sydney School of Public Health, and Professor and Director of the Centre for Human Development at the Administrative Staff College of India. Prof. Dandona has taught researchers, policymakers and public health practitioners, and has served as a technical expert in public health for governments, international organizations and funding agencies.
