Biography
Dr. Sukumar Vellakkal is working as health economist at SANCD. His research and teaching expertise/interest include health insurance, health financing, chronic diseases, economic evaluation and health econometrics. Dr Vellakkal did his PhD in Economics on the topic of Health Insurance at ISEC, Bangalore with PhD internship at University of Calgary Canada, MSc in Health Economics and Policy from Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands and MA in Economics from Calicut University. Prior to joining SANCD, he was faculty member ( Fellow) at Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), New Delhi. Before that, after clearing the UGC-NET, he had taught economics at bachelors and masters levels for three years in Kasaragod Government College in Kerala. Dr. Vellakkal was a recipient of fellowships including ICCSR doctoral fellowship, ECCP fellowship and the Canadian studies research fellowship. He has attended various national and international conferences/workshops and presented research papers on various aspects of Indian health insurance and also published in peer reviewed national and international journals as well as in leading national dailies
