Biography

Over the past 20 years with McKinsey, Rajat has worked in several geographies across Asia, Europe, and North America. He serves clients primarily in the automotive and assembly sector but has also served clients in steel, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, apparel and textiles, and telecommunications. Rajat leads McKinsey’s advanced industries work in the Asia-Pacific region, which is comprised of clients in the automotive and assembly, electronics, and aerospace and defence sectors. Until recently, he co-led the Operations Practice for McKinsey in the Asia-Pacific region. Examples of Rajat’s previous work include the following: developing a long-term growth strategy and driving excellence for the dealership operations of a passenger-car OEM in India developing a long-term growth strategy for an Indian automotive supplier, including selecting the businesses to retain and grow in its portfolio spearheading growth initiatives for the solutions and services business of a global steel company by significantly transforming overall operations excellence and profitability driving manufacturing process improvements across the formulations and active pharmaceutical ingredient units for a leading generic pharmaceutical company in India deploying a lean production system across a network of 50 plants for a leading apparel exporter in India creating a road map for reconfiguring the cost structure in the context of lower crude pricing for an upstream national oil company (NOC) in India executing a large capital project for an Indian oil and gas company in less time than estimated, while building a central-projects capability Rajat contributes to knowledge creation and policy debate toward enabling India to grow its manufacturing sector and has partnered with automotive industry associations (ACMA, SIAM) in helping catalyze industry growth. He has also helped shape the quality transformation journey for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the country, in collaboration with Quality Council of India (QCI), by shaping the zero effect, zero defect (ZED) initiative. Rajat is the cofounder of the TIME India Awards, a collaboration between McKinsey & Company and TIME Inc. to recognize excellence and innovation in Indian manufacturing. He is also a founder and sponsor of Ashoka University, based in Delhi.
