Biography

Dr Gaurav Agarwal, MS, FACS is currently a Professor in the Department of Endocrine & Breast Surgery at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow, India, He graduated with distinction from the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. He obtained general surgery residency training and a Master of Surgery degree from the IMS, BHU Varanasi, and was awarded National Board certification in Surgery in 1993. He received residency and fellowship training in Endocrine & Breast Surgery at SGPGIMS Lucknow, and was the first surgeon in India to be awarded a Post-doctoral certificate of training in this discipline. He had further training as a Tom Reeve International Clinical Fellow (2000-2001) in Endocrine Surgery at University of Sydney Australia, as UICC fellow at University of Nagoya Medical School in Japan, and as a Robert Schumann foundation scholar at the European Institute of Tele-surgery in Strasbourg France. He was awarded a Certificate of Advanced Surgical Training by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2001, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was awarded the UICC-ICRETT Fellowship and the International Guest Scholarship Award of the American College of Surgeons in 2005. He has visited numerous renowned universities, institutions and hospitals in North America, Europe, Japan and Australia, and has delivered more than 100 invited lectures at various fora in India and abroad.

Research Interest

Endocrine Oncology/ Endocrine Surgical Research Vitamin D deficiency, molecular Ca++/Vit D metabolic pathways in parathyroid oncogenesis, and in pathogenesis of skeletal disease in PHPT Myocardial and vasothelial dysfunction in overtly symptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism patients Intra-operative iPTH dynamics in patients undergoing surgery for hyperparathyroidism. Densitometric studies by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry in patients with PHPT. Follow-up studies in PHPT patients: biochemical, radiologic and densitometric recovery of parathyroid bone disease following parathyroidectomy.
