Biography
Professor Bertram da Silva is Associate Professor and Vice-Principal (Arts and Science), St. Xavier’s College. After graduating from St. Xavier’s College he went on to complete his M.A. in English from Calcutta University. Immediately on completion of his M.A. he joined St. Xavier’s College. Having specialized in American Literature, he was invited to teach as a Guest Lecturer at Calcutta University where he took courses in American Fiction for a number of years. Prof. da Silva has chaired and moderated seminars on English and American Literature. Presently he offers courses in Poetry Appreciation and analysis, Shakespearean drama, and Romantic and Modern Poetry. His courses are designed to stimulate students’ interest by teaching them how to read, think and be creative and original in their appreciation of works of literature. His courses range beyond literature and take the student into painting and music, history and philosophy, society and culture. Prof. da Silva has contributed to the cultural life of the college having directed plays and conducted the College Choir in winter performances of Christmas and classical music. Head of the English Department from 1999 to 2006 and Dean of Arts from 2006 to 2011, Prof. da Silva is currently Vice-Principal (Arts and Science), a position which has not curtailed his commitment to teaching or his involvement in department activities
