Biography

Professor Kamala Sankaran assumed charge as the Vice Chancellor of the Tamil National Law School on 30.12.2016. Prior to this, she was the Professor-in-Charge, Campus Law Centre, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. She has been Research Professor at the Indian Law Institute and was earlier at the Faculty of Law, Jamia Millia Islamia. Her areas of teaching and research interests include constitutional law, international labour standards, and the regulation of work. She is currently working on the areas of the informal economy and law, and equality and discrimination issues in South Asia. Professor Kamala Sankaran has been a Fellow, Stellenbosch Institute of Advanced Study, South Africa, Visiting South Asian Research Fellow, School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies, Oxford University, and a Visiting Scholar and recipient of the Fulbright Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at the Georgetown University Law Center, Washington D.C. She has been involved in national and international research projects in the areas of informal economy, comparative constitutional law etc.. Prof. Sankaran has published widely in several international and national journals. Prof. Sankaran has also authored various books and is a contributor to the Halsburys Laws of India. Her recent books include Affirmative Action: A View from the Global South (Dupper and Sankaran eds.) (SunMedia, Stellenbosch, 2014) and Challenging the Legal Boundaries of Work Regulation, (Fudge, McCrystal and Sankaran eds.)(Hart Publishing, Oxford, 2012). She has been an invited plenary speaker in international conferences and presented papers at several national and international conferences/seminars both within India and abroad including the Indian Society for Labour Economics, Indian Society for International Law, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, Stellenbosch University, South Africa, International Association of Law Schools General Assembly, Queen Elizabeth House, Oxford University, Hertie School of Governance, Berlin etc. Prof. Sankaran has served as the Dean, Legal Affairs, University of Delhi. She has been a member, Academic Council, TERI University, and is currently Member Working Group on Migration, Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation. Prof. Kamala Sankaran has been member of various official committees and has also served as a member of the Delhi High Court Legal Service Committee and the Delhi State Legal Services Authority Prof Sankaran has been Editor of the Delhi Law Review, and is currently on the International Editorial Advisory Board, International Journal of Comparative Labour Law and Industrial Relations, published by Kluwer Law and a member, Editorial Advisory Board, Indian Journal of Labour Economcs, ISLE
