Biography
Since March, 2008, Mr. Rathod has been President Director of PT Bakrie & Brothers Tbk, the holding company for the Bakrie Group; one of the largest conglomerates in Indonesia with interests in Coal Mining, Telecommunication and Infrastructure Sectors. The Group companies include Bumi Resources (largest coal mining company in Indonesia), Bakrie Sumatera Plantation (3rd largest plantation company in Indonesia), Bakrie Land (largest property company in Indonesia), Energi Mega (largest private oil and gas company in Indonesia)and Bakrie Telecom amongst others. Besides his role as President Director of the holding company, Mr Rathod is also active in several companies within the group as either Commissioner and/or Director. Mr Rathod joined the Bakrie Group in 1987 and has played a critical and transformational role within the group at all times. Following a decade of growth for the Group from 1987-97, he was involved in the restructuring of both the business and financial profile as a result of the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Subsequently, Mr. Rathod was instrumental in several M&A/financing transactions for the group which included the acquisition of PT Kaltim Prima Coal from British Petroleum & Rio Tinto and PT Arutmin Indonesia from BHP Biliton Ltd. These transactions helped cement a new identity for the Group both domestically and internationally. Since he joined in 1987, the market capitalization of the group has increased from US$35m to over US$25b. Prior to Bakrie, Mr. Rathod worked in Indonesia at PT Texmaco Indonesia Haya and PT Tripatra Engineering from 1981-87. Mr. Rathod began his career in India in 1970 having worked for Ashok Leyland and ICICI (now ICICI Bank). He received his Bachelor of Commerce degree from Andhra University, India in 1970 and is a Chartered Accountant (CA) from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India since 1976.
