Biography
Michael joined IBM Research in 2010 where he initially worked on the development of low level software, functional and system suites for Next Generation systems such as IBM PowerEN, a massively multi threaded, wire-speed Power processor. He currently works on a number of projects investigating the role and use of big data in environmental monitoring and management. This includes the Acoustic Monitoring for Ocean Energy Devices project, and a project investigating Waste Management in Smarter Cities. Michael received B.Eng and M.Eng. degrees in Computer Engineering and a PhD in Communications and Networks from the University of Limerick. From 1998 to 2001 he worked at Broadcom Eireann Research Limited in the areas of Telecom Management and Mobile Communications. During 2000 he was a visiting scholar with the COMET group at Columbia University. From 2001 Michael was a member of the Wireless Access Research Centre at the University of Limerick. Michael's research interests include environmental monitoring platforms and mobile & sensor networks.
