Biography

He has served as a member of our board of directors since June 2010. Mr. Berns is a consultant to the pharmaceutical industry. From March 2014 to June 2016, he served as the Chief Executive Officer and President of Anacor Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company, which was acquired by Pfizer Inc. in June 2016. He also served as a member of the board of directors of Anacor Pharmaceuticals, Inc. from 2012 until 2016, including as Chairman of its board of directors from 2013 until 2016. From September 2012 to March 2014, he was a self-employed consultant to the pharmaceutical industry. From March 2006 to September 2012, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer, and as a member of the board of directors, of Allos Therapeutics, Inc., a pharmaceutical company acquired by Spectrum Pharmaceuticals, Inc. From July 2005 to March 2006, Mr. Berns was a self-employed consultant to the pharmaceutical industry. From June 2002 to July 2005, Mr. Berns was President, Chief Executive Officer and a director of Bone Care International, Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical company that was acquired by Genzyme Corporation in 2005. From 2001 to 2002, Mr. Berns served as Vice President and General Manager of the Immunology, Oncology and Pain Therapeutics business unit of Abbott Laboratories, a pharmaceutical company. From 2000 to 2001, he served as Vice President, Marketing of BASF Pharmaceuticals/Knoll, a pharmaceutical company, and from 1990 to 2000, Mr. Berns held various positions, including senior management roles, at Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, a pharmaceutical company. He previously served on the boards of directors of Cellectar Biosciences, Inc. (formerly Novelos Therapeutics, Inc.) from November 2013 to June 2016 and XenoPort, Inc. from 2005 to May 2016. Mr. Berns received a B.S. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin. He has served as a member of our board of directors since June 2010. Mr. Berns is a consultant to the pharmaceutical industry.
