Biography
Born and raised in Dublin, Simon Nolan lectured at the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy before coming to the Department of Philosophy at Maynooth in 2008. His main interests are medieval philosophy, philosophy of religion, philosophy of language, metaphysics, aesthetics, toleration and the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein. His research has focused on late medieval theories of cognition (in Gerard of Bologna (d. 1317) and John Baconthorpe (c.1290-1345/8)) and the life, times and work of the major Irish thinker, Richard FitzRalph (1299-1360). He is editing (with Michael Dunne) the forthcoming Brill Companion to Richard FitzRalph. In addition Simon is working on the topic of toleration and its limits in late medieval thought with a focus on the work of Guido Terreni (c.1270.1342). He is also engaged in a study of Wittgenstein's philosophy of colour.
