Biography
Susan is a Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science, Maynooth University since 1997. She holds a PhD in Computer Science, a Masters in Computer Science, a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education and a Bachelor of Science (management). She received a National Award for Excellence in Teaching, 2009 from then President Mary McAleese, in recognition of her commitment to integrating research into her teaching practice. Susan’s research interests are in adaptive learning and affective computing. She pioneered the development of PreSS, a system that can predict performance of novice programmers with over 80% accuracy after minimal exposure to programming concepts. The accuracy of this system has been repeatedly re-validated over the past ten years. She is currently leading an international study, the largest of its kind, to predict programming performance of 1500 participating students and continues to work with her team on improving the systems ability. She also has a keen interest in the development of personalised adaptive learning systems, that consider behavioural, cognitive and psycho-physiological factors that influence a student in real-time online learning-enviornments. She is currently leading several PhD research projects on student engagement, anxiety in learning, educational analytics and adaptive technology.
