Biography
My research interests relate to the impact of acquired communication disorders, specifically aphasia and primary progressive aphasia, on participation, access, wellbeing and identity. My work focuses on interventions to increase participation and address barriers within the communication environment, enhancing access to the social environment, improving healthcare encounters and reintegration into society. I see this work as linked to social justice and reducing inequalities. I have a particular interest in how these challenges can be addressed in a global context, particularly where resources are constrained. I am interested in the intersection between communication and mental health, both in the contexts of adults with mental health disorders and in relation to the psychological wellbeing of adults with acquired communication disorders. In addition I am interested in the application of Relevance Theory to communication disorders is, where my work has focused on metarepresentational abilities of people with schizophrenia as revealed in conversation; as well as on Relevance Theoretic analysis of conversational strategies in interactions in which one partner has a communication disability.
