Biography

Having studied Theology at the Waldensian Faculty of Theology (Rome, Italy) and at the Kirchliche Hochschule Bethel (Bielefeld, Germany), Daniele Pevarello completed his PhD in Jewish and Early Christian studies at the University of Cambridge (England) with a thesis on the influence of Pythagoreanism on Early Christian asceticism. Before moving to Trinity College Dublin, he has taught New Testament and Greek at the Faculty of Divinity of the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on the interaction between Early Christian thought and Graeco-Roman philosophy with particular emphasis on the construction of the religious identity and conceptual world of the early Christians. Until 2011, he has been a member of the steering committee of the “Hellenistic Moral Philosophy and Early Christianity” Unit of the Society of Biblical Literature.

Research Interest

Dr Pevarello’s main publications have focused on the redaction and interpretation of the Gospel of John, the reception of Paul in the second and third century, Second Temple Judaism and the role of Graeco-Roman moral philosophy in the development of early Christian asceticism. His main research interests lie in the study of devotion and religious identity in the Graeco-Roman world, Greek language, the interpretation of the New Testament and its reception, the use of pagan sources in Jewish and early Christian literature and early Christian art. Dr Pevarello is currently working on a monograph on the development of the theme of friendship in the Bible (with John Hobbins) and on a commentary on Wisdom of Solomon (with William Horbury). He is also researching early Christian attitudes towards heroes and heroisation (in particular the cult of Heracles) in relation to the development of Christological discourses in the New Testament and early Christian literature.
