Biography
Following doctoral studies at New College (University of Edinburgh) and academic appointments in Canada and Belfast, Dr. Shepherd joined the department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Chester where he served prior to his appointment at Trinity in 2013. In addition to founding and co-chairing the Bible and Moving Image programme unit of the Society of Biblical Literature’s International Meeting, Dr. Shepherd is currently a member of the board of the International Organization for Targum Studies as well as the committee of the Society for Old Testament Studies (UK). He also serves as external examiner for the undergraduate programme in the department of Biblical Studies at the University of Sheffield and is an honorary research fellow in the University of Manchester’s Centre for Biblical Studies.
Research Interest
Dr. Shepherd’s teaching and published research interests include the Hebrew Bible (esp. the Deuteronomistic History and Ezra-Nehemiah), the New Testament (Aramaic background and the Gospel of John), ancient translation traditions (esp. Aramaic traditions: Targum, Peshitta and Qumran versions) and the Bible and popular culture (esp. the Bible and the Early Cinema). In addition to his teaching, supervision and research responsibilities in Hebrew Bible and its reception, Dr. Shepherd will be co-chairing the Biblical Studies Research Seminar, a joint initiative of the Religions and Theology Department and the Loyola Institute.
