Research Interest

Pearces historical work focuses on issues at the intersection between metaphysics, theology, and philosophy of science in 17th and 18th century European philosophy. A central question that he sees tying these areas together for many thinkers in the period is the nature of mental and linguistic representation: how do we manage to think and talk about minds, external objects, God, or the theoretical posits of physics? He is particularly interested in Berkeley, Arnauld, and Leibniz and has also published on metaphysical issues in analytic philosophy of religion.
