Biography
My theoretical interests are in neural computing, in terminology and ontology, and in natural language processing, especially information extraction. I am motivated by the way humans deal with information transmitted in different modalities - texts, images, numbers, diagrams. My research in neural computing has led to multi-net neural systems that can mimic the evolution of language and numerosity. Multi-net systems were used in co-locating images and their textual descriptions. My work in terminology and ontology relates to the automatic extraction and deployment of terminology of specialist disciplines in applications as diverse as translation and information extraction; work in ontology has helped develop systems that can track growth of knowledge from early theoretical stages onto patenting and into the market place. The practical objective is to create information systems that can not only deal with information in a number of different modalities but can learn to deal with different modalities. I am currently one of the Principal Investigators of a project dealing with governance, risk and compliance (GRC) in financial organizations, sponsored by Enterprise Ireland, an agency of the Irish government. The GRC project is a multi-university project 6 year project (2011-2015) and involves major national and international banks in Ireland together with software vendors and financial news organizations. I have managed and collaborated on 21 peer-reviewed EU, Irish and UK government projects in advanced IT, and led 6 technology transfer projects. My collaborators range from small start-ups to large multi-nationals (e.g. Siemens, Mercedes-Benz and France Telecom, AXA Insurance), UK Police Forces and Research Associations. I have supervised 34 successful PhD theses, 2 Engineering Doctorates, and 2 MPhil theses. Currently, I am supervising 5 PhD students working full time mainly in sentiment analysis and image analysis. Published over 200 papers and reports, and five books. Invited speaker at three international conferences. I have served as an external examiner of doctoral dissertations at Sheffield, Manchester, Nottingham Trent and Helsinki Universities.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: Terminology and Ontology; Knowledge Acquisition; Expert Systems. NEURAL NETWORKS: Multi-net neural computing systems, simulation of developmental and of degenerative systems. BEHAVIOURAL FINANCE: Affect and sentiment analysis. Metaphors in Finance. Interaction of sentiment and named entities with prices and volumes of financial and commodity instruments. KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT: Discovery and Innovation; Knowledge Transfer especially best practice.
