Biography

Professor Margaret O Mahony holds the Chair (Full Professor) of Civil Engineering at Trinity College Dublin and is the first woman to do so since its foundation in 1842. Her qualifications include a degree in civil engineering from NUI (Galway) and a doctorate in engineering science from the University of Oxford. She is a Fellow of Engineers Ireland (Chartered Engineer), a Fellow of the Irish Academy of Engineers and is a chartered engineer with the Institution of Civil Engineers in the UK. She has served as Head of the Engineering School, Head of the Department of Civil, Structural & Environmental Engineering and Bursar at TCD. As Director of the Centre for Transport Research, she has coordinated or worked as Principal Investigator on a large number of research contracts funded by the EU and national research agencies. She has been a member of a number of the Transportation Research Board (National Academy of Science) committees in the US and recently served on the Transport Advisory Group for the EU Horizon 2020 Programme. In addition to her academic contributions, she has served on the Board of the Railway Procurement Agency and the National Roads Authority (now both merged to form Transport Infrastructure Ireland). Her current research interests include: innovations in public transport and road infrastructure, optimising transport networks, electric vehicles, smart cities, autonomous vehicles, health impacts of transport pollutants and security in transport networks and hubs.
