Biography
A qualified social worker, has specialised in child welfare and mental health practice. Completed advanced training in London and postgraduate training in child and family mental health in the Institute of Psychiatry/ Maudsley Hospital in 1989. From 1996 - 1999,a member of the management committee of Access Ireland, the first EU-funded project promoting the integration of refugees in Ireland. From 1998 - 2002,a member of the management board of a Tempus Phare project re-establishing social work education at university level in Romania. In 2002 she developed and directed a new Masters in Social Work programme in Trinity. From 2003 - 2011, a member of the Irish statutory social work regulatory body, the National Social Work Qualifications Board (NSWQB),elected as nice-chair in Jan 2008,re-elected in 2010 and served until its demise in 2012. As well as teaching and administrative responsibilities, undertakes commissioned research work in a range of areas and pro bono consultation work with selected groups.
Research Interest
Therapeutic interventions with children and families over the lifespan; (ii) bereavement support, end-of-life care and loss; (iii)solution-focused and strengths-based approaches; (iv) gender, transnationalism and migration; (v) critical perspectives on helping professions; (vi) Inclusive practice: the experiences of migrant and ethnically diverse carers and social workers in Ireland.
