Biography
Patrick Matthews is a Lecturer in Deaf Studies and ISL Co-ordinator. He is also Course Director for the Diploma in ISL Teaching programme. Dr. Lorraine Leeson and Mr. Matthews were the first members of staff in the CDS when the Centre was originally set up in 2001. He developed the curriculum for the following modules; ISL , Perspectives on Deafness and Teaching methods. Mr. Matthews current research focuses on the development and feasibility of a orthography system for ISL. He has played a key role in the Irish Deaf Community over many years. He has extensive knowledge and experience of teaching ISL both generically and within specific domains, - to Deaf people as L1 learners and to non-deaf people as L2 learners. In recent years he has focused on the training and assessment of sign language interpreters. Mr. Matthews' research interests include the linguistics of ISL, Deaf education, Deaf community and culture, Teaching Methodolgies, Assessment Methods and a system of orthography for Irish Sign Language. Mr. Matthews is Deputy Chief Examiner and Drafter for the Leaving Certificate Applied in Irish Sign Language. He is currently involved in the translation of the relevant chapters from the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse Report (The Ryan Report) into Irish Sign Language.
