Biography
Paul Dockree is an Associate Professor in the School of Psychology and Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience. Paul is a cognitive neuroscientist interested in mechanisms of attention, memory and awareness through investigation with neuropsychological and electrophysiological methods. His work has a clinical emphasis to understand changes in functioning caused by brain injury and aging but also a strong interest in developing rehabilitation techniques to improve patient recovery from cognitive disabilities.
Research Interest
Our research investigates mechanisms of attention, memory, executive control and awareness using novel cognitive paradigms combined with neuropsychological and electrophysiological methods. This work has a clinical emphasis to understand changes in functioning caused by traumatic brain injury and focal brain lesions but also a strong interest in developing rehabilitation techniques to improve patient recovery from cognitive disabilities. For example, a recent project has the objective of alleviating attentional filtering problems in patients with brain injury where paying attention in the context of distracting noise from the environment can be extremely challenging. We are also interested in age-related individual differences in cognitive function. A recent project has explored variation in episodic memory in the elderly and identified different neural signatures of preserved and impaired episodic memory in older age. A new multi-centre research program funded under the EU Marie Curie Initial Training Network 'INDIREA', and coordinated by Prof Glyn Humphreys, aims to employ non-invasive brain stimulation and biofeedback as an approach to enhance different facets of cognition in elderly people with memory difficulties. Finally, we are also investigating individual differences in the experience of bilingualism and how managing two or more languages in mind can strengthen cognitive flexibility and improve neural efficiency.
