Biography

Vincent holds the Chair of Computer Science (1990) in the School of Computer Science and Statistics, Trinity College, the Dublin of University. He holds the personal chair of Artificial Intelligence in the School of Computer Science & Statistics, TCD. He holds BSc, MSc and PhD degrees in Computer Science and was awarded Fellowship of Trinity College for his contribution to research in knowledge management, web based personalisation and adaptive technologies. He is CEO and co-founder of Centre for Intelligent Content (CNGL) which is a world leading multi-institutional research centre focusing on multilingual, multi modal globalisation of digital content. From Jan 2015 Vincent will be CEO and Director of the ADAPT Research Centre for Digital Content Platforms and Application Research. In 2010 he founded the Learnovate Centre (Centre for Applied research in Learning Technology) which is a industry-academic led centre focusing on technology enhanced learning across learning in K12, corporate learning and adult education RESEARCH FUNDING AND COMMERCIALISATION Vincent has been won over EURO 50 Million in research funding awards from EU, SFI, EI/IDA and Industry over the last fifteen years. Vincent has led over twenty international and national research projects under EU Framework, Science Foundation Ireland, Enterprise Ireland and Industry research programmes. He has led over seventeen international and national research projects under EU Framework, Science Foundation Ireland, Enterprise Ireland and industry programmes Vincent is the founder of 3 spin out companies in the last five years (EmpowerTheUser, EMIZAR and WRIPL) which have won prestigious industry awards, e.g. Enterprise Ireland's 'One to Watch' for EmpowerTheUser, Ryan Academy's Innovation Award for WRIPL. These spin outs have won approximately EURO 1M in industry (startup) grants and venture capital RESEARCH AND DISTINCTIONS He has authored over three hundred scientific papers in peer reviewed research journals and international conferences and has received seven 'best paper' awards at international conferences. Other awards include the European Language Label Award for innovation in Language LearningTechnology. He holds three international patents in the area of personalisation and adaptive digital content. Vincent has served as editor for many international journals e.g. IEEE Communications and has been General/Scientific Programme Chair for many international conferences including IEEE/IFIP Integrated Management Symposium 2011, ACM Adaptive Hypermedia 2006. He has served in many leadership positions (Workshop Chair, Tutorial Chair etc.) on over forty international conference organising committees and approximately ninety scientific programme committees. He is regularly invited as keynote speaker at international conferences (e.g. ACM UMAP 2009, ICWL 2012) as well as a keynote/guest speaker at multiple postgraduate summer schools and industry conferences, e.g. Brand2Global 2013, GALA/TLA 2013. ACADEMIC RESEARCH STUDENT SUPERVISION Vincent has supervised 22 PhDs and over 12 MSc (by research) students to completion. These graduates have successfully taken positions in universities e.g University of British Columbia, University of Manchester, Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin as well as in industry research laboratories e.g. IBM Research, Microsoft Research, Google, Ericsson Research etc. Where these graduates have pursued careers in industry they have taken senior posts in multi-nationals based in Ireland and abroad e.g. SAP Ireland, IBM Ireland, AOL Ireland, CitiGroup. RESEARCH INTERESTS Vincent's personal research interest focuses on developing new techniques and technologies to enable systems to scrutably adapt to the individual user so as to empower them in their task, problem or activity. Specifically his research has focused on personalisation and the knowledge models upon which such personalization can be driven.
