Biography
Philip is a Senior Lecturer and the Principal Investigator on the B-MIDEA project. The B-MIDEA team have created a Business Intelligence Application, incorporating prediction and simulation capabilities, enabling organisation's to efficiently retrieve and analyse the very latest developments relating to financial service products/services worldwide and gain real-time insight on consumer sentiment through retrieving, amalgamating, analysing and visualising the millions of items of data items that exist online and in social media. Philip has been invited to deliver keynotes and workshops by numerous multinational companies and at leading practitioner events including the Banking & Payments Federation of Ireland National Conference. Philip recently received the Stafford Beer Medal in recognition of the most outstanding contribution to the philosophy, theory and practice of Information Systems (IS) from the Operational Research (OR) Society at an Awards Ceremony which took place at the Royal Society, Carlton House Terrace, London. Founded over 50 years ago, the OR Society is the world's oldest established learned society catering to the Operational Research profession and one of the largest in the world, with 3,000 members in 53 countries. Philip has been a leading member of research teams which have been successful in securing in excess of €1m in research funding in recent years. His research focus is on the business performance of information systems. His work has been published in leading journals in the information systems field including the European Journal of Information Systems (EJIS), Journal of Strategic Information Systems (JSIS) and Information Technology and People (IT&P). Furthermore, his work has been presented at the leading information systems conferences in the world. Research Interest
In relation to industry impact, I have written industry focused white papers and have delivered practitioner workshops in institution’s including the International Energy Research Centre (), Sunlife Financial, Citibank, Core International, Fexco and Goodbody. Furthermore, I have delivered keynote addresses on leading edge topics at leading practitioner events such as AIB Merchant Services “” and the Banking Payments Federation of Ireland National Conference (2014) . The impact which my B-MIDEA research project has had on organisation’s is illustrated in that it has facilitated new service and job creation in organisation’s, including Fexco. I hold a visiting lectureship position in the Telfer School of Management, University of Ottawa, Canada, one of only two triple accredited Business Schools in Canada and one of only fifty nine worldwide. I have supervised PhD’s to completion and I collaborate on a regular basis with colleagues in Ireland, UK, Canada, Norway, the Netherlands and Australia. I have acted as external examiner for a number of PhD’s and on numerous programme approval programmes. I have supervised to completion, both PhD and Msc by Research students. I have supervised completed minor dissertations on a broad range of programmes including; MBS in Managerial Accounting and Management Information Systems (MIMAS) and the MBS in Health Services Management. As part of my role as principal investigator on B-MIDEA, I am currently supervising Dr. Rajendra Prasath, a Research Fellow on this project and Dr, Parnab Kumar (Post Doctoral researcher). I have acted as external examiner for a number of PhD thesis in Management Information Systems for the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia. I have chaired PhD examinations in UCC. I have also examined a number of MA and MSc theses from a number of institutions including Waterford Institute of Technology and University Of Ottawa, Ontario. I have fulfilled a multitude of roles (Track chair, associate editor, advisory committee member and programme committee member) associated with organising fifteen top ranked international conferences and workshops. This includes playing a leading role in the top ranked European Information Systems conference (ECIS), which runs once every year. I am a currently an active member of a number of leading international academic associations. I have contributed extensively to their work. These include: Association of Information Systems Irish Chapter of the Association for Information Systems Member of IFIP WG8.3 Member of IFIP WG8.2 In my academic career to date I have had significant involvement in a multitude of the top ranked IS conferences, as per Willcocks et al (2008), fulfilling a broad range of roles including; acting as track chair, associate editor, being a member of programme and local organising committees and chairing numerous sessions at conferences. I have served as a Guest Editor for a Special Issue focusing on Smart Mobile Media Services for the International Journal of Electronic Business Research (IJEBR) . I have served as an associate editor for an A ranked information systems journals, namely Electronic Markets. Furthermore, I have reviewed for over a dozen of the top international IS journals including; the Information Systems Journal, the Journal of Strategic Information Systems and the European Journal of Information Systems over the last 10 years.
