Biography

Deirdre completed her undergraduate physiotherapy training at St Georges University of London in 2008. After qualifying, Deirdre worked as an Anatomy Demonstrator facilitating healthcare students from a variety of healthcare disciplines. Deirdre also co-founded continual professional development (CPD) theory and practical workshops which became affiliated with the CSP. During this time, Deirdre acted as a graduate representative for the CSP London Board. Deirdre completed her junior rotations in King’s College Hospital in London before going on to work as specialist senior physiotherapist in Older Person’s Care at King’s College Hospital. Since her time in King’s College Hospital, Deirdre has worked as a senior physiotherapist in diverse primary care environments throughout London including supported discharge teams, rapid response teams, neuro-rehabilitation teams and community physiotherapy. Since returning to Ireland in 2014, Deirdre has moved progressively towards working in the educational setting. Initially she worked in the private and healthcare setting as well as working with paediatric and adult physical and intellectual disabilities. Deirdre has engaged in teaching and mentoring throughout her various roles. She has an avid interest in reflective practice, long term conditions and service development. Deirdre worked in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) as a Physiotherapy Practice Education Coordinator, prior to commencing her role at the University of Limerick. Deirdre has facilitated professional development opportunities in practice education in several areas which include; - Language and Intercultural Communication in Clinical Contexts, challenges and approaches - IPE in the clinical environment – introduction and implementation - Technology Enhanced Learning in the clinical environment & cost effective resources for practice education During her time at RCSI, Deirdre composed the following: - Supporting Students with Disabilities on Clinical Placement – A framework discussion - Guidelines for supporting students with disabilities on clinical placement Co-author of the following; - Guidance Policy for Practice Education Supervision CUH - Overview of Communication Language Input in School of Physiotherapy
