Eileen Carey

Biography

Eileen’s field of expertise is the area of Intellectual Disabilities. She is a BSc. (Nursing Studies) graduate of the University of Limerick, a PG Dip. (Nurse Education) and a MSc. (Advanced Nursing Studies) graduate of University of Ulster and a Doctor in Philosophy (Ph.D) graduate of Trinity College, Dublin. Eileen has a long history of clinical practice within interdisciplinary frameworks in Intellectual Disability Services in the Mid West Region. She has lectured on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the Department of Nursing and Midwifery. Eileen was one of the founding members of the Intellectual Disability Studies Research group at UL (IDS@UL). As a member of a subgroup of IDS, Eileen has been involved in developing and facilitating a Research Active Programme (RAP), which aims to enable people with intellectual disabilities to develop research skills. In 2012, Eileen has been involved in the preparation of a seedfunding research proposal for Research Active Programme 2: Building a sustainable and Diverse Intellectual Disability Research Team. Eileen is currently a member of the Intellectual Disability and Mental Health Research group in the Department of Nursing and Midwifery. This group is comprised of colleges interested in the areas of Intellectual Disability and of Mental Health. The aim of the group is to develop and conduct excellent quality research in the area of intellectual disability and mental health.
