Brigid Arkins

Biography

Brigid is currently a lecturer in nursing at Waterford Institute of Technology. She has over 10 years lecturing experience in the area of nursing and healthcare. She has published and presented peer reviewed papers nationally and internationally on issues relating to intimate partner violence, violence and aggression, substance misuse, self harm and mental health. Prior to commencing her post at Waterford Institute of Technology, Brigid was a lecturer in nursing at University College Cork. Brigid worked as a service manager for female inpatient mental health services in East London and the City Mental Health NHS Trust prior to starting her academic career. This involved developing acute, rehabiltation, forensic and peri-natal mental health services for women in East London. This service for women was cited at the time as an example of best practice by the Department of Health in the UK. Brigid also co-ordinated and introduced a benchmark tool to promote evidence based practice in healthcare settings at East London and the City Mental Health Trust. As a result of this the Trust was awarded extra funding for evidenced based practice.
